Reflections for T&L improvement
After attending seminars and gaining some experience for the past few years, I have thought about several weaknesses in my teaching and how to improve it as follows:
The course content was not focused on achieving the course learning outcomes (CLOs).
Relate each topic to the CLOs in every lecture.
The assessment rubric did not consider the domain (cognitive, affective, psychomotor) of each CLO.
Make sure each question in the rubric lies within the correct domain of the assessed CLO.
Highlight important points in the slides and simplify long sentences into short points or figures.
Constructed questions that loaded students with unnecessary mental burden e.g. negative statements in multiple-choice questions (MSQs) that were confusing and difficult to understand.
Focus on the necessary cognitive element related to the syllabus, with intelligent choices of answers.
Late sharing of lecture notes and laboratory manuals before the class and laboratory sessions.
It was purposely done for students to pay attention during the class, but sometimes it may be due to late confirmation by the laboratory staff. A student suggested that the slides are shared earlier with blank spaces for students to fill in during the lecture. This can definitely be implemented next time.
