In my teaching I infuse problem-based learning as one approach to bring real-world experiences into the classroom. PBL triggers demonstrate a variety of elements, such as psychosocial or environmental problems, that make as if the students working with patients. For example, while teaching gastrointestinal system I would like to provide them a case study related to the topic I am teaching and will ask the student to think about the problems that the patient can face and how they can help the patient overcome the problem (e.g. ulcer). PBL develop the students to think critically and creatively by going beyond the "black and white" definitions of textbook scenarios. My medical students may think creatively and contribute their own ideas to the debate while working together to solve problems using examples. This helps them gain confidence for working with a variety of patient in future. Students are inspired to study more and generate new ideas because of the confidence they gain from working collaboratively with their classmates, which feeds their curiosity and desire to be lifelong learners.
