In my teaching I use case studies as one approach to bring real-world experiences into the classroom. Case studies demonstrate a variety of elements, such as psychosocial or environmental problems, that make working with patients unclear. For example, while teaching musculoskeletal physiotherapy I would give them a case study related to the topic I am teaching and will ask the student to think about the problems that the patient can face and how they can help the patient overcome the problem. I would also show them X rays of various disorders and ask them to identify the problem that could be hindering patients movement. Case studies push students to think critically and creatively by going beyond the "black and white" definitions of textbook scenarios. My students may think creatively and contribute their own ideas to the debate while working together to solve problems using examples. This helps them gain confidence for working with a variety of clientele. Students are inspired to study more and generate new ideas as a result of the confidence they gain from working collaboratively with their classmates, which feeds their curiosity and desire to be lifelong learners.
