From 2014 onwards, English Language Teachers teaching Core University English Courses were required to prepare a module for the process of teaching and learning. These modules were specifically written in allignment to the Course DCI. For our English for Communication 1 course, the module was named as SmARt Book starting from 2018 to mark the introduction of AR elements. This is to keep up with new challenges and call for educational technological improvements with the rise of Education 4.0
Over the last three years, our team has kept improvising the AR content in SmARt Book. Using Dr. Puentedura's SAMR model as a reference for AR implementation, the challenge in introducing new technology is not just about adding new things, but also focusing on how to actually make it useful for the process of teaching and learning.
Voice Out! is a branch project of SmARt Book which includes a VR app along with the improvised AR content which primarily focus on improving speaking skills. It is aimed to assist users with speaking activities and technical aspects of speaking activity such as controlling pace, tone, stresses and volume.
Virtual Speaking Race was a part of "Karnival Citra Jati Diri" organised by Centre for Fundamental Studies in 2019. This activity was the first of its kind introduced in the annual event as an English Speaking enhancement activity. With the conventional elements of 'Treasure Hunting' or 'Explorace' type of activity at its core, Virtual Speaking Race required the participants to use AR app to scan and find clues and then performing specific speaking tasks streamed live to a Facebook page observed by teachers in other locations.
As all the activities were streamed live and recorded on Facebook, the page for Virtual Speaking Race 2019 is also a testimony and proof of tasks completed by the students.
Flipgrid is a short-video sharing platform by Microsoft. Students have to record a video of themselves to complete a task set by teachers. They can also view and comment other videos. Flipgrid is a good tool for quick and short English Language speaking task. It's also a great tool to increase students' confidence in speaking and eliminating factors that might hinder their performance compared to speaking in class.
In answering the call of the Malaysian Education Blueprint, specifically the English Language Roadmap which aims for a better English Language Learning Environment for students in Higher Learning Institutions. Centre for Fundamental Studies (Department of Languages) is working closely with PPIR to introduce a new system, English Profile System for students as a one-stop-center for english language related activities registration and record of achievements.
The existing problem of English Language exposure for students in UniSZA is that English is only offered in year 1 (semester 1 and 2) as core university courses. What happens after that depends on the decisions of their faculty or other departments to provide English Language Enhancement activities throughout the duration of their study. The proposed English Profile System will help to visualize the whole situation and assist faculties and other centers to plan for English Language enhancement programs effectively.
With the proposed English Profile System, students and faculties will have a complete record of what they have done in improving their English starting from the first year until graduation. Faculties and students will also be able to observe in-detail what they actually need to improve their state of language competency. It is hoped that with the future implementation of this system, future graduates of UniSZA are guaranteed to achieve their required exit-policy requirement for English before their graduation. insyaAllah.
