Falsafah Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran- (I) WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, THE TOUGH GETS GOING ; (II) PASSION, INTEGRITY AND HUMANITY WALK THE TALKS
Leaving again? Another mission? This is the question that I often received everytime when I rush to the airport on Thursday afternoon to catch flights either to Kuala Lumpur or Sabah. My usual answer is always " Yes, I am on a mission to ''SAVE THE WORLD AGAIN". Truthfully speaking, I had been on this mission to save the world since I graduated with my PhD from Japan. I was a Look East Policy JPA Recipient for Postgraduate in 2004. Back then, I served as an officer with the Government body and I clearly remember that I promised to carry my mission to help Malaysia in developing its strategic plans etc. As a dedicated Malaysia Government Servant, I am dedicated to honour my payback services until my retirement by sharing my knowledge through the EAFM training series co-organised by Department of Fisheries Malaysia and Department of Sabah since 2013. Besides that, as a Resource Person and think tank group for Malaysia, my mission is not over yet until my expiry time. The video TELLS PART OF MY STORY.
I firmly believe that teaching needs demonstration. Swimming and water confidence are important elements to teach to our Aquatic Science students who are new to the aquatic world (OCEANOGRAPHY COURSE ASQ10403- CO-SHARING WITH DR. NADZIFAH YAAKUB). You can see that I ALSO SWIM WITH MY STUDENTS AT THE SEA. While floating, I CAN EXPLAIN to them on the existing aquatic life that live downunder the sea water. NICE NICE NICE AND REAL REAL REAL.
You are watching a terrible artist who cannot draw well EXPLAINING and ANSWERING her students on a question related to restoring the destructed coral reef areas, a topic covered in ECOSYSTEM APPROACH TO FISHERIES MANAGEMENT COURSE ASQ46102- CO-SHARING WITH DR NGUANG SIEW ING. Not easy for me as I am terrible in drawing, but I guess my students understood my drawing through my explaination and actions (LOL).
I am a firm believer that EDUCATION IS USELESS WITHOUT GOOD ATTITUDE. In educating our nation to be a respectable nation, good manners matter the most. SELF DISCIPLINE, STRONG, CONSIDERATE, KIND, WELL MANNERED, HELPFUL, RESPECT are among the HUMAN GOOD ATTITUDE PARAMETERS that I usually EMBED in my daily teaching. I shall quote some examples here.
Example 1: Class starts at 8.00am. Students should be in class before 8.00am whether the educator is there or not. I call that discipline
Example 2: Wishing everyone Good Morning/Good Day/Salam/Selamat Pagi is like music to the ears for many folks
Example 3: Clean as you go; meaning we do not expect others to clean our own mess i.e throw your own rubbish after eating at McD
I am a traditional thinker on roles of educators in high education institution like UniSZA. As an educator, I am hired and given responsibilities to ensure that I give my LEVEL BEST to teach my students. My salary is also paid by TAX PAYERS too, meaning I MUST NEVER FORGET my roles in providing updated knowledge according to my specialization. Any form of other responsibilities should NEVER BE AN EXCUSE of not being able to deliver my CORE BUSINESS as a university educator.
# SONG NUMBER I - A SONG BY ELLA (STANDING IN THE EYES OF THE WORLD) - EVERGREEN AND THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SONG PRODUCED BY A MALAYSIAN FOR MALAYSIANS
# SONG NUMBER II - A SONG THAT SUITS MY PHILOSOPHY IN EDUCATING MY STUDENTS (be a dreamer that makes things happen)
# SONG NUMBER III - A SONG THAT INSPIRES ME SINCE I WAS YOUNGER TO BE TOUGH WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH
# SONG NUMBER IV - A SONG THAT REMINDS ME OF MY ROOTS (A SPECIAL ATTRIBUTE TO MY MOM , A FORMER TEACHER WHO INSTILLED SELF DISCIPLINE IN ME). MY PARENTS USED TO TELL ME THIS 'WE CANNOT GIVE YOU ASSETS THAT CAN DISAPPEAR WITHIN SECONDS; BUT WE SHALL GIVE YOU YOUR ASSET FOR LIFE...AND THAT IS KNOWLEDGE..STUDY HARD, AS HARD AS YOU CAN FOR NO ONE CAN TAKE YOUR KNOWLEDGE FROM YOU, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE....IT BELONGS SOLELY TO YOU'' - Sylvester Komilus (DAD) and Lucy T.Langat (MOM).
Guess what.....THEY were ABSOLUTELY 100% RIGHT.
