DO IT YOURSELF (DIY) COMPETITION
In line with inculcating theories and innovation spirits among students, I had decided to come up with DIY projects for both Animal Nutrition and Fish Feeds and Feeding courses. Why I chose this approach?
1. Young students LOVE CHALLENGES
2. Students learn that BEING INNOVATIVE is worth of their learning experiences and TIME INVESTMENT (winning is the prime goal)
3. Students explore their ABILITIES as INNOVATOR
4. Students will not be BORED with SCIENCES
5. DIY boosts students' SELF CONFIDENCE
6. Happy students LEARN BETTER
(i) Animal Nutrition (ASH22403) DIY project
(i) Fish feeds and feeding (ASQ35003) DIY project
TESTIMONY FROM STUDENTS DOING THEIR DIY FEED (TAKEN LIVE)
((iii) A presentation rubric is used by appointed judges (Lecturers/Science Officers) to judge presentations and output of students.
EAFM OUR TEARS
This video is part of the assignment for students who undertook Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management Course (ASQ46102), It was shared in Youtube and also to EAFM Lead of Malaysia.
GLOBAL CLASSROOM / INDUSTRY TALK
These talks help students to learn from the experiences of the industry players. In simpler words, teaching becomes REAL when representatives from the industry meet and share their expertise and expectations to our students.
(i) Fish processing and preservation (ASQ 35703) - face to face
(ii) Ecosystem approach to fisheries management (ASQ 46102) - online
FRIENDLY DEBATE - LIMNOLOGY (ASQ10703)
In our limnology course, both of us (Dr. Nadzifah Yaakub and I) will conduct a friendly debate among our students who undertook the course. It was fun because they learnt to explore facts to be their points in their debate. Simultaneously, we want them to practice their public speaking. We believe that this is the right teaching mode to shape them up although they are just in SEMESTER 2, YEAR 1.
COMMUNITY TALK BY BSC AQUATIC SCIENCE STUDENTS TO ORANG ASLI COMMUNITY, TASIK CHINI, PAHANG (26-27 April 2018)
What made this community talk a special one?
(i) A home-made slide show -made by students using recycle papers
(ii) Lecturers and students took turns to share the content of slides
(iii) All participants participated in gotong-royong
KOREAN'S NO 1 SERIES (NAMHAE, GEYEONGSANGNAM-DO PROVINCE)
My latest approach to attract students attention in understanding the subjects better is by making them watch famous series like Korean's No 1 available in Netflix. This series showcasted experiences by the three actors in catching anchovies and baby octopus at the seashore. These series are related to some parts of my lecture content in Oceanography (Coastal and Tides). The series explained real situation of catching these fish sustainably based on natural tides and sea levels.
Why I chose this approach? I did some reading on my young audience in class, and here it goes.....
......Around the world, members of Generation Z are spending more time on electronic devices and less time reading books than before,[32][33][34] with implications for their attention spans,[35][36] vocabulary,[37][38] academic performance,[39] and future economic contributions.............Generation Z is one of the first cohorts to have Internet technology readily available at a young age.[205] With the Web 2.0 revolution that occurred throughout the mid-late 2000s and 2010s, they have been exposed to an unprecedented amount of technology in their upbringing, with the use of mobile devices growing exponentially over time. Anthony Turner characterizes Generation Z as having a "digital bond to the Internet", and argues that it may help youth to escape from emotional and mental struggles they face offline.[4] (Wikipedia 2022)
Therefore, it is rather useless to ask them to read Oceanography books that would bore them to death; and attend my class without any enthusiasm. So, the best way is to find the latest genre that everyone talks about....k-pop, K-drama, everything K K K....even FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 was focused on Jungkook (the singer for the opening ceremony..and he made a World record by gaining 1 million likes in 2 mins; ..so I thought Korean Number 1 can be an attractant to MY STUDENTS to learn more about Oceanography.
As this teaching innovation is a new approach in my teaching strategy, Ive made a survey on the students who are currently taking Oceanography to know their feelings of this new strategy. Let us read their comments in the watsapp screenshots.
