TEACHING ASSESSMENT
All assessment methods have different purposes during and after instruction. Two common types of assessment being performed throughout the semester are formative and summative assessments.
1. Formative Assessment
Formative assessment is used in the first attempt of developing instruction. The goal is to monitor student learning to provide feedback. It helps to identify the first gaps in your instruction. Based on this feedback you’ll know what to focus on for further expansion for your instruction. In my lesson, various approaches are being used to properly assess the performance of the students. Most of the time an online quiz, and short essay questions. However, depending on the course I teach, the type of assessment could be varied.
For example, in the course of digital image processing, the student will be asked to make a lab report during the practical sessions. It is because software such as Matlab will be sued to demonstrate the use of digital image processing, especially for medical images. However, some of the reports will be assessed as the purpose is to see if they are able to perform the task given based on the lectures and tutorials. For assessment, a specific assignment will be given with rubrics based on the course learning outcomes of the course.

2. Summative Assessment
Summative assessment is looking at how far the students can understand or master the course based on the course learning outcomes. It measures the effectiveness of learning, understanding the instructions, and the benefits for a long term purpose. The benefits here refer to the ability of the students to use the learned knowledge, skills and attitudes. The assessments will be graded according to the performance shown by the students. Most of the time, this assessment is referring to the final exams or tests that have been counted for continuous assessment marks. In my lesson, most of the students will be assessed during the final exam and along the semester, the tests that carry certain percentages will be reported. There are various approaches for final exams and tests. For example, the written assignment or lab report or written test could be chosen as one type of assessment, while for the final exam written or oral test or OSPE could be done. In my current approaches, all of these approaches have been done in accordance with the course learning outcomes.
